Abstract

This article presents the case study of a patient with a metastatic tumor in the upper posterior area of the left postcentral gyrus. The patient displayed an inability to release objects that he grasped or pinched with his right hand. The symptoms occurred regardless of the object being held, the shape of the hand when grasping, and the fingers used to hold the object. The patient experienced clumsiness and could not appropriately hold tools in the right hand. However, the patient did not show paralysis and could perform complex finger movements. Grasp reflex or instinctive grasp reactions were not induced in this patient. Our findings suggest that the inability to release a held object could occur independently of grasp reflex and instinctive grasp reaction, and could be caused by parietal lesions.
