Abstract

In this study, we focus on reading hiragana aloud, and report the prevalence of children who showed difficulty in learning hiragana, the degree of acquiring hiragana before school, the effect of preschool teaching, and the results of follow-up surveys of infants who had difficulty in acquiring hiragana before school. As a result, 0.2% of elementary school children had difficulty in reading hiragana aloud (1.4% for hiragana writing) . Among preschool senior children, more than 70% of children could read all 71 characters or showed only one mistake. As a result of multiple regression analysis of senior preschool children, only cognitive abilities relating with acquiring characters significantly predicted hiragana reading performance, and environmental factors showed no significant contribution. Similar results were obtained in another participants. In addition, even if the teaching method was controlled as an intervention study, no significant difference was observed between trained and non-trained group, as it was considered that the hiragana teaching for senior preschool children was not effective. This result was observed in other participants again. However, 90% of senior preschool children with low hiragana acquisition caught up immediately after the summer vacation in the first grade of elementary school. It is suggested that the readiness regarding hiragana acquisition would be completed by that time.
