Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop the implementation/promotion models of competitive sports for people with mental health issues. The subjects were 25 people with mental health issues who participate in competitive sports, and semi-structured interviews were conducted regarding the meaning/purpose of their participation. The interview results were documented verbatim and analyzed. It was found that the purpose of their participation in competitive sports was to improve their performance and develop an ambitious spirit. It was also found that participation had positive mental effects. Furthermore, they expected social integration through sports regardless of their disabilities or mental health issues. The interview results suggest that competitive sports not only enhanced their competitiveness and ambitious spirit, but also provided a form of rehabilitation for social integration. In conclusion, athletes with mental health issues who began sports as recreational activities were able to improve their competitiveness, and as their purposes expanded, they gradually became empowered and their social integration improved.
