This paper discusses how the subsidies of the Remote Islands Development Act changed the structure of fishing villages on remote islands. As a case study we have mapped out the post-war infrastructure development in the former Ashibe town on Iki Island and analysed how government subsidies changed the structure of the area. Between the two main fishing villages of Ashibeura and Setoura, the fishing port was enlarged and developed, with the construction of a ferry terminal and the development of commercial facilities on the reclaimed land. As a result, it was found that the two independent fishing villages became contiguous settlements through the reclaimed land. It was also found that most of the infrastructure development took place on the outer fringes rather than in the center of the historic fishing village, and that although the commercial function was lost, the structure of the center did not change significantly.
