Description

Seven (13.7%) of 51 patients with pseudogout arthritis at our hospital had pseudogout arthritis of both knees. All of the 7 patients were female, with a mean age of 81 years.

I propose the following mechanism to explain simultaneous pseudogout attacks of both knees: The meniscus is damaged by trauma or aging, leading to the deposition of calcium pyrophosphate crystals in the damaged area; in addition, decreased calcium concentration in the blood or synovial fluid triggers the precipitation of calcium pyrophosphate crystals in the synovial fluid, thereby causing arthritis.
