Abstract

As part of the efforts to develop a labor-saving artificial pollination technic for producing male sterile Japanese cedar, effectiveness of spray pollination in which pollen in a suspension is sprayed onto female flowers was examined. A 10% sucrose aqueous solution was used as an extender and a pollination solution was adjusted into a weight ratio of 20:1. The pollination solution was sprayed onto the female flowers when they were in bloom using a commercially available sprayer. The resulting cone size and seed germination rate were similar to those obtained with Supplemental Mass Pollination( SMP) using a conventional pollination gun. It was also found that the work hours involved were about 25% of that for SMP. The use of this labor-saving artificial pollination technology makes it possible to reduce the amount of pollen used and the number of work hours involved.
