Special Mode Softening Preceding Martensitic Transformation in β Phase Alloys

Behaviours of the special mode in many β phase alloys are studied in detail from a view point of the martensitic transformation mechanism. The special mode becomes soft just above the M_s point. The softening is responsible to the (112) [111] shear, i.e. to the formation process of the basal planes of the martensite. The origin of the special mode softening is an anharmonicity of the β_1 lattice.
