Abstract

The biologically active metabolite of vitamin D3, 1α, 25-dihydroxy vitamin D3, regulates diverse physiological effects such as cell differentiation, calcium metabolism, and immune function through its nuclear receptor, VDR (Vitamin D Receptor). In the pathogenesis of asthma, a negative correlation between serum vitamin D levels and asthma severity has been observed, suggesting that vitamin D plays an important role in the risk of asthma exacerbation, including the onset of asthma and response to therapeutic agents. In the present study, we investigated the expression level of vitamin D metabolizing enzymes and VDR in human tissues including trachea and lung and its individual differences.
