Description

This paper consists of a survey on compact cities. Japan faces the dual problems of an aging and declining population. In recent years, the financial situation of local governments has been burdened by an increase in the number of large-scale disasters. A compact city is one solution for these problems, since it consolidates functions necessary for daily life, such as medical care, welfare, commerce, etc. into one area to promote a sustainable city management. The compact city that the author is aiming for is an area that already has a certain degree of population density and stores for daily necessities within walking distance. However, the author's previous papers did not define a clear rationale or positioning of the selected compact cities. Therefore, first, this paper surveys the compact cities about which descriptions have been published and defines their categories. Finally, we discuss Danchi (housing complexes) and the Tokyo Bay Area as compact cities where there is no problem obtaining everything needed for daily life within a 20-minute walk, but which have not thus far been introduced in previous studies.
