Description
The area around "Akanesawa no Akaiwa", a natural monument designated by Aomori Prefec-ture, in Imabetsu Town was a place that produced high-quality red soil from the Jomon period to the Edo period. The Hirosaki clan placed officials, mined and refined red soil, and presented it to the Edo Shogunate as red pigment Bengara(red iron oxide). When the Hirosaki clan mined red soil, it appointed magistrates and dispatched officials and craftsmen to guardhouses. This paper summarizes about the management system, work details, and facilities and equipment at that time from the records of the Hirosaki clan's office diary.
