Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating the act of touching, including the manner of touching and shapes that one wants to touch, based on the analysis of the survey conducted on 316 infants and elementary school students. To conduct the survey, we set up a place where the participants would encounter six differently shaped three-dimensional objects and recorded their physical and verbal reactions on video. Their actions were extracted individually from the video recording, and the “duration,” “frequency,” and “order” of touching each object as well as “actions induced by touching” were measured. The measurement results were then analyzed regarding the tendency in the type of actions induced by touching. As a result, both infants and elementary school students showed a high tendency to touch a sphere at all ages and grades; the analysis of utterances and worksheets also indicated that the sphere was the shape they preferred to touch. In addition, the induced actions differed according to shapes; for instance, spheres were often squeezed, while cones and pyramids were picked up. The results also demonstrated that the shapes of objects had a certain level of influence on the manner of touching.
