Description

This paper focuses on a way of reading of Spivak's Can the Subaltern Speak? which is one of the basic texts for post-colonial studies, but is extremely difficult to read. Especially invoking the Preface of Spivak's English translation for Of Grammatology, and Derrida's Double séance in La dissémination, we decipher it while looking at the practice of the “duality” of reading, the strategy that Spivak inherited from Derrida. Spivak's decipherment of texts and events is always depicted as "double" and the "duality" is multiplexed, which applies to both Spivak's analysis and the subject being analyzed. Finally, I will show that this "suspension" of "undecidability" is crucial for Spivak’s "reading practice".
