As part of a series of studies on influence of operations on the body and nutritional control, the intrahepatic metabolism of sorbitol with labeled sorbitol & histpaothological transition of glycogen with rabbit liver were investigated. The results obtained are as follows : 1. In vitro and in vivo experiments in rat liver using 14C-U-Sorbitol, obtained the result suggesting the following relation :Sorbitol-Fuructose-Glycogen Glucose CO2 slow rapid2. When rat liver slices were incubated with 14C-U-Sorbitol for 4 hours, it was found that 24% of sorbitol was converted to glucose. This result does not agree with those reported by Blakley. In the present work CO2 derived from sorbitol was a mere 0.74-2.5%. 3. When 14C-U-Sorbitol was injected directly into the rat portal vein at a rate of 0.5 mC/min., after 30 minutes, 8.5-29.9% of the sorbitol injected was found in the blood stream and over 50% of sorbitol was converted to glucose in the liver. 4. When 10 g/kg body weight of sorbitol was injected intravenously into the rabbit, it was clearly observed by histological investigation that liver glycogen showed a high increase at 1,2 hours after injection and returned to normal level at 48 hours. No sign showing detrimental influence on the liver parenchym was found in the presence of massive doses of sorbitol injection. From the results described above, it can be mentioned that in liver,sorbitol is readily metabolized and is converted to glucose and glycogen through fructose.
