This paper aims to examine the nature of narratives from the perspective of human existence. There are various viewpoints and interpretations of narratives by researchers, and there are various approaches. In this paper, I would like to present a discussion on the essence of narratives, which is the core of narrative research. First, I discuss the role of narratives in the individualized society with reference to Z. Bauman. Next, I will examine what is the essence of narratives, which occupy an important position in academic fields and daily life today based on After Virtue (A. MacIntyre, 1981/2021). And finally, we will extract perspectives that can be used in future narrative research.
