Recently in Japan, GPOs (Group Purchasing Organizations) are emerging in healthcare industry. GPOs are organizations that negotiate prices for drugs, devices, and other medical products and services on behalf of healthcare providers. Many studies in the United States show that GPOs provide a range of additional services to healthcare providers that may lower costs or improve operations. This paper examines the impact of GPOs’ expansion on the pharmaceutical industry under the Japanese drug pricing system. And we consider a possibility that the presence of GPOs is favorable for pharmaceutical firms under the Japanese drug pricing system from an economics perspective.
