In this study, the effects of seismic design method of highway bridges allowing poundings of bridge girders were considered. Dynamic response analysis on medium size highway bridges was carried out by changing gap size at the ends of bridge girders and the maximum amplitude of the inputted wave on the case of no rubber shock absorber, and response stress and response velocity at the ends of bridge girders and response rotation angle at the pier bottom were calculated. Similarly, dynamic response analysis was carried out on the cases that rubber shock absorber was attached to the ends of bridge girders. The effects of gap reduction on dynamic response of the ends of bridge girders and the pier bottom were considered. As a result, it is clarified that seismic design method of highway bridges allowing the pounding of bridge girders is effective.
