Abstract

Practice Reports

In recent years, due to growing interest in “Science, Technology and Society (STS)”, there has been an increasing demand for interdisciplinary education that goes beyond the boundaries of the humanities and science. Therefore, as part of interdisciplinary education with the aim of raising awareness of interdisciplinary collaboration from an early stage, we designed and taught a course called ‘Deliberating on the Future of Science, Technology and Society’ for first-year university students. The course included collaboration among students to create serious game as learning materials on the theme of trans-science. In this paper we present an overview of the course design and implementation, as well as an analysis of the serious games produced by the students, class assignments and questionnaires. These results suggest that the incremental approach of the course helped students improve their conceptual understanding, that their understanding of various trans-scientific issues aligned with Ethical, Legal and Social Issues (ELSI), and that the course design promoted student autonomy by making them aware of their own learning process.
