Description
“Diary of SUZAKU (Suzaku Nikki)” by Jun’ichiro TANIZAKI (1886-1965) is a diary of his first visit to Kyoto. From April to May 1912, it was serialized over 19 issues in major newspapers in Tokyo and Osaka. This paper examines the fact that Tanizaki referred to "Kyoto Meishou Ki" for writing it. A full text of the 13th issue in the series will be reprinted from the original manuscript of “Diary of SUZAKU”, which belongs to “Kyoto Institute, Library and Archives” Tanizaki introduced the historical sites of Daigokuden and Rajomon and Modoribashi in it. After the inspection of 38 guidebooks on Kyoto published between 1894 and 1911, we identified that “Kyoto Meishou Ki (1903)” was the reference Tanizaki used. In “Diary of SUZAKU”, Tanizaki expressed the image of Heiankyo at the time of the relocation of the capital with descriptions which closely refer to the “Kyoto Meishou Ki''. The couplets and modifiers in it were also used in his later “Konjiki no Shi” (1914) and “Uguisu Hime” (1917) to express a character’s dreaming utopia. “Kyoto Meishou Ki” has played a great influence in Tanizaki’s writings in the 1910s.
