<p> Purpose: The purpose of this study is to clarify the effectiveness of peer education in preventive education of alcohol harassment for university students.</p><p> Methods: Subjects participating in this study were 76 first-year students (48 male, 28 female). Initially, we produced an educator training program to train university students as educators. Subsequently, dividing the subjects(76)into two groups based on the order of their student's numbers―an interventional group(43)and a control group(33)―the educators conducted alcohol harassment prevention classes using peer education for the former group. One graduate student instructed the latter group using a lecture. Both of classes were conducted with the intention that “students consider alcohol harassment as their own problem and come up with feasible preventive countermeasures.”</p><p> Results: Results of analyses related to the number and content of opinions obtained in group work and written descriptions of their impressions showed that the opinions were more numerous, the contents were more varied, and that the exchange of views was more vigorous in the interventional group than in the control group. Above all, as the effectiveness of peer education, educators played the role of maintaining a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere to elicit opinions from students, who otherwise would have felt nervous; they also served as peer role models because they belonged to the same generation as the students involved in group work.</p><p> Conclusion: Students who took part in the program were able to consider alcohol harassment as their own problem and devise countermeasures. The results obtained through this study suggest that peer education will be able to be used also in alcohol harassment prevention education.</p>
