Abstract
<p>Two homologous series of ester-linked cyanobiphenyl dimers (CBCOOnOCOCB) and fluorinated homologs [(2-F)CBCOOnOCOCB)] were synthesized and their phase-transition behavior was evaluated by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Upon cooling of POM for CBCOOnOCOCB, a nematic (N) phase was observed in the supercooled isotropic (Iso) phase for all n, and the N phase of n = 7, 9, 11 transitioned to a twisted bend nematic (NTB) phase. No liquid crystal phase was observed for (2-F)CBCOOnOCOCB (n = 3 and 5), whereas (2-F)CBCOOnOCOCB (n = 9 and 11) exhibited both the N and NTB phases. Interestingly, (2-F)CBCOO7OCOCB formed the NTB phase from the Iso phase.</p>
