German romantic composer, Robert Schumann (1810-1856), composed works in a variety of areas during his life, but he notably wrote many pieces that included “fur die Jugend” (for children) in the title, particularly in his later life. A musical and cultural movement during Schumann’s period of greatest activity in 19th century Germany was the practice of families and friends enjoying music at home. This was embodied in the concept of Hausmusik (“music played in the home”), which was spreading throughout Germany at the time. With the appearances of educational thinkers such as Pestalozzi and Frobel, new public education systems for children were being considered, and songs for children were written one after the other against the backdrop of the uniquely German Hausmusik environment. When the May Revolution broke out in Dresden in 1849, the Schumann family fled the fighting and moved temporarily to Kreischa, where Schumann composed Liederalbum fur die Jugend Op.79, Jagdlieder Op.137, and the Motet Op.93. The political interest of the republican Schumann undoubtedly lurked within his creative motivation for these works. It is also easy to surmise that Schumann lived in a time in which he was exposed to diverse literary currents, and he was stimulated to write lieder (songs) while being influenced by the outstanding poets who were his contemporaries. This paper focuses on Liederalbum fur die Jugend Op.79, and investigates Schumann’s intentions behind including “fur die Jugend” in the title, while clarifying its features through analyses of the lyrics and music.
