Abstract

For this study, we analyzed experiences of inland angling at nearby rivers or ponds for Japanese people during children and its transition using online survey with questionnaires given to Japanese adults. Results show that the most caught fish were Cyprinids, with angling using live bait collected individually as the most favored method. However, many respondents from the young generation chose fishing for alien species using lures. This trend was clearly observed in areas where salmonids are not familiar as a target for fishing. Most respondents went fishing during childhood with other children such as friends, brothers or sisters. Furthermore, most respondents were introduced to angling by other children. These results imply that angling for Cyprinids using live bait is most suitable for children. Furthermore, it is necessary that the rivers and ponds to which children can go fishing be prepared for enhancement of angling among children.
