Abstract

Environmental ethics are thought to be the same thing as environmental values. We think that the ability to think critically is an important basic element of environmental ethics. We set up a hypothesis about the formation of environmental ethics based on the definition of critical thinking in Hamano,et al. Environmental ethics are formed step by step.In the first step, man judges the information. Next, through the repetition of assimilation, adjustment, and inference about the information,he forms his own opinion. We studied the possibility of forming environmental ethics through debate in the classroom. We found through this study that the adoption of the debate method has the following four advantages : 1. an increase in the desire for learning and expression 2. the formation of new thoughts and new viewpoints 3. the development of one's powers of judgement, assimilation, and inference 4. the formation of a multi-valued orientation of thinking Through the study of student's reactions,we found that the debate method activates the student's desire to learn. Through debate students can express frankly their own ideas and feelings because no definite solution is required.
