Abstract

The effect of ephedra herb addition and stirring on ethanol fermentation from 250 g/kg of glucose solutions containing fermentation inhibiting compounds such as furfural or sodium sulfate were investigated. In absent of inhibitors, both ephedra herb addition and stirring contributed to the improvement of the fermentation rate. However, the synergistic effect of them was not observed unfortunately. At 1 g/kg of furfural, both ephedra herb addition and stirring gave higher fermentation rate and ethanol yield compared to the control experiment. At 5 g/kg of furfural, about 1.6-fold higher ethanol yield by the addition of ephedra herb was observed in comparing with the control experiment. However, on inhibition of sodium sulfate, significant effect of both ephedra herb addition and stirring did not observed.
