Abstract

Herein, we report the clinical statistical data of 2,313 patients who underwent microscopic laryngeal surgery at the Osaka Voice Center over the last 18 years. There were 1,074 cases of vocal fold polyps, 244 cases of vocal fold cysts, 211 cases of vocal fold paralysis, 190 cases of vocal nodules, 164 cases of Reinke's edema of the vocal folds, and 156 cases of laryngeal papilloma. By gender, the patients comprised 1,230 women (53.3%) and 1,083 men (46.8%). The youngest was 11 years old, the oldest was 89 years old, and the average age was 47.5 years. We also propose to report other data, including the occupational characteristics and reoperation rates.

As compared to previous reports, the percentage of women was higher, the percentage of patients with malignant tumors tended to be lower, and the percentage of cases with vocal fold cysts was higher. It is thought that the differences could possibly be attributable to the differences in the characteristics of the medical facilities included to collate the data, that is core regional hospitals in previous reports versus university hospital in our present report.

Based on these results, we discuss the indications for microscopic laryngeal surgery in each disease.
