Abstract

【Purpose】The Japan Trauma Data Bank (JTDB) was established in 2003 to improve the quality of trauma care by collecting and analyzing data on severe trauma. The JTDB collects and analyzes data on severe trauma to clarify the current status of care at facilities that treat severe trauma and to improve the quality of care. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the current status of JTDB utilization, and to examine the possible future direction of the JTDB. 【Methods】The data were extracted from academic papers published in PubMed® from January 2005 to August 2021, the Japana Centra Revuo Medicina Web database, and the literature list published by JTDB. 【Results】Thirty-five papers regarding the use of the JTDB were published in Japanese-language journals and 120 papers on this topic were published in English-language journals by August 2021. The number of publications on the JTDB in Japanese journals has decreased in recent years, whereas the number of publications in English journals has increased year by year. In terms of the number of articles by category, 52 (43.3%) papers focused on injury type, 21 (17.5%) focused on patient background, and 6 articles proposed predictive models based on the JTDB. In addition, there were more than 200 presentations on the JTDB at domestic and international academic meetings. 【Conclusion】For the prevention and reduction of the severity of trauma, we propose that it is necessary to build a system that can link accident data collected by the police with data from the JTDB. Linking various data sources will enable more detailed studies to be carried out and will increase the value of using the JTDB, because it will be useful not only for medical research but also for engineering research and research on medical economics.
