Abstract

Designed by Goichi Takeda, the 80-year-old student dormitory was revitalized as a cooperative housing complex, "Kyudo Gakusha," the oldest reinforced concrete housing complex in Japan that currently has residents. The success of the revitalization of “Kyudo Gakusha”was due to the fact that it met the five criteria for revitalization of historic buildings, the attractiveness of the design of the building itself, the meticulous renovation plan, and the efforts of the project members. However, the revitalization of the "Kyudo Gakusha" is quite common in Europe and other countries, and it is important to create a social system in which this is the norm. To this end, it is necessary to clarify the responsibility of the supply side, to avoid the creation of unnecessary buildings, and to establish a mechanism to induce appropriate investment in existing buildings.
