Abstract

The Nara-e Tale of Genji Shikishi owned by the Faculty of Culture and Information Science, Doshisha University is a collection of pictures depicting scenes from The Tale of Genji. The pictures pasted on the folding screens and sliding doors have been peeled off. There are twenty-four. It is estimated to have been produced in the middle of the Edo period. The purpose of this paper is to identify scenes from The Tale of Genji and position them in the genealogy of Genji-e. Although these paintings are clearly not the work of a famous painter, they help give an idea of the breadth of Genji paintings in the Edo period. This time, we will take up paintings by Kagaribi, Nowaki, Miyuki, Umegae wakananojyou, Kashiwagi, Niounomiya and Shiigamoto. And finally, I will consider all twenty-four pictures.
