Abstract

City residents’ recognition of policy in realizing a compact city has been pointed out as crucially important. Nevertheless, a Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism survey indicates city residents’ self-identified recognitions of compact city policy as generally low. Therefore, we administered our own questionnaire survey for this study to ascertain whether city residents have misunderstandings about compact city policy contents. Results of the analysis produced several findings: 1) A high percentage of city residents misunderstand withdrawal from mountainous areas and the construction of tower condominiums as a compact city policy. 2) The rate of misunderstanding is rather high in the group with high self-identified recognition of the compact city policy. It is noteworthy that information provided by local governments about compact city policy might itself be misleading, because groups with high selfidentified recognition also have high levels of trust in governments.
