Abstract

<p> The preventive method of sand deposition inside a conduit of Numakawa-Daini floodway (set back type) was investigated by a movable bed experiment with a model scale of 1/50. In the experiment, the seawater flowed into the upstream direction through No. 1 channel of the floodway associated with the run-up waves under the storm wave condition, and the seawater returned to the sea through Nos. 2 and 3 channels. To prevent sand depositing inside the conduit, this circulation is necessary to be stopped. So, an experiment was carried out whether the gate at the upstream end of No. 1 channel is open or closed. It was concluded that the amount of sand deposited inside the conduit was markedly reduced when the upstream gate of No. 1 channel was fully closed during storm wave conditions, except the deposition of a small amount of sand immediately upstream near the exit of No. 1 channel. Thus, for the prevension of sand deposition inside the channel due to waves, the closure of the gate at upstream of the channel was effective.</p>
