Abstract

Cavity collapse caused by internal erosion of backfilling sand has occurred frequently at the back sides of coastal structures such as seawalls and quaywalls worldwide. In this study, to prevent the cavity collapse at waterfront, prototype-scale model experiments were conducted to identify and clarify the time-varying development and collapse processes of a cavity caused by internal erosion under concrete/asphalt pavement using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveying technique. The study revealed the characteristics and differences of the time-varying development and collapse processes of the cavity under concrete and asphalt pavement. In addition, by applying the GPR surveying technique, and comparing and verifying the obtained GPR signal patterns on the ground before and after the cavity formation under the pavement, it was possible to accurately detect and identify the position and development process of the cavity from 1.0 m or deeper below the pavement, which was considered difficult to detect in the past.
