Abstract

The manufacturing industry in Japan is exposed to changes in the business environment due to technological innovation and is faced with the challenge of overcoming the decline in business competitiveness. How can the manufacturing industry overcome this difficult situation? In this paper, we consider the re-skilling of knowledge workers in new business development, based on a case study of the human resource development department in manufacturing company A. The main points of this paper are as follows. First, in the manufacturing industry, re-skilling of knowledge workers was implemented when new business development was conducted. However, secondly, without a proper understanding of what kind of new projects will be implemented in which companies, it is impossible to visualize the skills required for re-skilling. And third, the human resource development department has roles for understanding the skills required for re-skilling and its implementation based on the company's performance management by department.
