抄録

Last summer I purchased several Burmese palm-leaf manuscripts. These were part of a collection of manuscripts bought by a pious man when he was on a pilgrimage in Burma. They were sold by his family after his death. A brief study of the date of copying revealed that one of the manuscripts was copied in 1800. This was before the Fifth Burmese Council (1871). The manuscript therefore appears to have some philological significance, and a summary of it is presented here. Key points are as follows: Vinaññ-Saṅgruih pāṭh i.e. Vinaya-Saṅgraha. Size: 50.1×5.6cm. Gilded edges with a middle band of vermillion; 9 lines; small Burmese script. Wooden covers with the title ‘Vinaññ-Saṅgruih pāṭh’. There are 277 leaves containing 2 texts. The first part consists of fols. ka-r, 1a-phī-v, 256b, beginning text: ‘namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammā-sambuddhassa // vatthuttayaṃ namassitvā // saraṇaṃ sabbapāṇinaṃ // vinaye pāṭavatthāya // yogāvacara bhikkhunaṃ //’. The second part consists fols. chu-r, 257a-jha-r, 277a with title Vinaññ-Saṅgruih ṭīkā. The last leaf gives the title ‘Vinaya-saṅkhepa-vaṇṇanā’. The manuscript probably consists of two texts, and has been scrapped because the end of the first part and the beginning of the second part were lost due to damage or other reasons. It will soon be photographed, digitized and registered in the online data base.
