Restoration of Household Succession in the Late Edo Period Using Documents of Tonoi Chiefs

Historical materials pertaining to village chiefs in Tonoi village, Hagi Domain (present-day Yamaguchi Prefecture） in the late Edo period, are accessible. These manuscripts were prepared manually utilizing archaic characters. We deciphered the manuscripts, created reprints, and compared them to restore the succession of households from 1826 to 1857. We discovered that certain peasant families went extinct while others established a branch family, resulting in consistent population of approximately 80 households during the research periods. Through reprint preparation and comparisons among them, we uncovered the whereabouts of shoji , paper doors that were moved out from a mountain castle in Tonoi around 1600. Regrettably, according to the authors’ investigations, such shoji may no longer exist in Tonoi.
