Abstract

This article focuses on the personal connections that support the Xi Jinping administration and examines who have supported Xi Jinping in his power consolidation process. It then discusses the ongoing transformation of Xi’s power base from the first to the third administration, and points out that this transformation could be a risk to the Xi Jinping administration. Specifically, this article shows that Xi Jinping's personal connections consist of eight different groups: Red Second Generation, Shaanxi Province, Tsinghua University, Hebei Province, Fujian Province, Zhejiang Province, Shanghai City, and former Nanjing military district. This article then points out that from the first to the third administrations, the core of Xi’s personal connections has gradually shifted from old friends to former subordinates. This article also point out that in terms of personal connections, the Xi Jinping administration faces risks related to policy rigidity, internal divisions, and succession issues.
