Abstract

We recognized distinct differences among the previous palynological descriptions for Pulsatilla cernua. In the present study, we characterized 3-colpate P. cernua pollen grains with microechinate (microspinulate) exine sculpture elements. Our SEM micrographs corroborated the microechinate sculpture described by Iwanami and Yamada (1984), Xi (1985) and Iwanami et al. (1988), but were clearly differentiated from the microreticulate to reticuate sculpture by Miyoshi et al. (2011) and Fujiki et al. (2016). Because the exine structure is important for the systematic study of genus Pulsatilla, further careful research, with more specimens from different locations, is necessary for P. cernua pollen to reach a conclusive decision on this distinct difference in exine sculpture.
