Abstract

Previous research about movement when carrying a lunch box in a plastic bag has not been fully examined, and its causes remain largely unknown. This paper aims to investigate the causes of this phenomenon. Analysis by stroboscopic photography and simulation using Newton's equation of motion was performed to better understand the movement. The results showed that the movement can be described by the addition of horizontal translational motion, vertical simple harmonic motion, and pendulum motion at shoulder and elbow. Next, the motion was measured by an accelerometer while changing the mass held in the hand, and the changes in the frequency domain were analyzed using the Fourier transform. Our findings indicate it is possible to classify the movement into two qualitatively different types of motion, and that there is a correlation between amplitude and mass, and between gravity and inertia. We concluded that major causes of the phenomenon are the effect of adding force to the arm in small increments to move the arm regularly and of a larger inertial force when the end of the elbow's range of motion is reached. We plan to invent a solution and conduct experiments to check whether the solution has a reduction effect.
