Abstract

<p>A simultaneous pulverization and acetylation of wood powder (Japanese cedar) was carried out using a vibration mill with ring media to imparts functionality to wood. Acetic anhydride was used as the acetylation reagent to be added during pulverization, and the input ratio of acetic anhydride was set to 50% for 800 g wood powder. The degree of acetylation by the weight percent gain (WPG) were estimated using saponification of the pulverized sample. And the particle size distribution and heat resistance by thermogravimetry was measured. As a result, acetylation reaction was finished in a short milling time of 15 minutes, and WPG of acetylated wood powder was reached 15.0%. In addition, the 95% weight loss temperature of the powder was improved by 14 °C.</p>
