Swift changes and quick movements lead people to make speedy communications. Short messages and swift responses seem to be a trend not only in the business world but also in everyday life. Many people may prefer shorter words and messages to express their ideas and emotions to each other. Such examples are found in speech and writings. Doctors or scientists or other professionals take shortened technical terms (for example: PTSD, NEET, Globish). Young boys and girls exchange text messages (=TM). I will explain about shortening in new English words, or in other words forming shortened words in the English-speaking world. My hypothesis for the cause and mechanism in shorter word formation in English is "encoding" of things and words in easier or more friendly style. First, I take up the shortening patterns of English new words. Second, I illustrate some of the shortened words classified by domains or fields of human activities. Then, I explain how the mechanism in formation process works and clarify linguistic characteristics.
