Abstract

To promote sustainable water resource management through collaboration among multiple stakeholders, it is essential to understand people-place relationship on the water environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of meaningful place in the Otogawa River catchment in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, and to clarify the trends and historical changes in the spatial patterns of people’s environmental perceptions of river environment from a social perspective. A questionnaire survey was conducted among Okazaki citizens to visualize where people find meaningful in the Otogawa River basin. Responses were categorized into four clusters (age: C1-C4, current activity: C5-C8) based on age and current activity (river-related occupation, involvement in river utilization), respectively, andcompared among the clusters. The results suggest the tendency to lose the meaning of “neighborhood river” after the river improvement around 1980, and that current river-related activities nurture a perception of the river as a whole catchment.
