Description

Recently, blue carbon, the amount of carbon captured by marine ecosystems, has been attracting attention since it is almost even equal to green carbon. In addition, it is said that ecosystems in freshwater areas such as aquatic macrophytes in agricultural ponds also have the possibility to capture and store carbon. However, the exuberance area and condition of macrophytes in freshwater areas has not been revealed in previous studies. Thus, this study aims to develop an estimation method for the exuberance area of macrophytes using satellite data (Sentinel-2).

We extracted water areas using near-infrared reflectance data, and ponds with NDVI values above a certain threshold were considered to have macrophytes. Then, the results were compared with field observations.

Of the 30 ponds extracted as water areas, 22 were correctly identified as having macrophytes, suggesting that satellite data can be used to estimate the presence of macrophytes in general.
