Abstract

Aquatic insects have continued to decline due to a wide variety of factors. In recent years, the situation has become even more critical due to factors such as neonicotinoid pesticides, a newly popular insecticide, and severe droughts caused. The number of candidate species for extinction continues to increase, and many species have been reduced to only a few localities. Under these circumstances, we have been working to conserve the remaining site, and have been able to save several species. In the study site, the extreme high temperatures and severe drought in the northern Hokkaido area have caused the drying up of habitat of endangered species. Similar droughts are now striking the Ryukyu Islands. Neonicotinoid pesticide contamination has also spread throughout the country. Thus, the management of existing areas must respond to various environmental risks.
