Abstract

A wide spectrum of neuro-psychological signs and symptoms may emerge on the basis of damage to the brain structures and neural connections, resulting in cognitive and functional impairment. The causative diseases may be classified as vascular, infectious, toxic, metabolic and degenerative. This overview targets at cerebral degeneration and is attempted to address the concept, the first epochal case reports, historical trajectory of the disease identity, genetics, pathologies, imaging features, and the present diagnostic criteria of the representative degenerative diseases: Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration and frontotemporal lobar degeneration. Further, concomitant pathologies, often found admixed with these major pathological changes, namely argyrophilic grain disease, Primary Age Related tauopathy (PART) and Limbic Predominant Age-related TDP-43 Encephalopathy (LATE), are succinctly described.
