Abstract

This study focuses on the Japanese grammatical theory, which suggests that only case particles evoke spatiality (imaginary representation of the relationship between human behavior and the environment), and considering spatiality implies that case particle selection is automatically determined by verb choice. Through an analysis of the author’s fieldnotes, instances where the verb “suwaru (to sit)” takes both the case particles “ni” and “de” were identified. Findings revealed that (1) when “de” is used, it describes a situation of “iawaseru (being present)”, and (2) the author is also present in that situation.
