Abstract

This paper is an essay on the history of database creation in Japan’ s historical research and attempts to connect this progress to data DX in economic history research, based on the author’s experiences and reflections as a historical researcher who has created databases. This paper discusses representative databases started by historical researchers since the mid- 1980s. It also positions the database integration at the National Institutes for the Humanities and “Historical Knowledge-Based Science” proposed by the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo as developments of these databases. It then critiques these databases by dividing them into “problem awareness type,” “research support type,” and “search and publication type.” In order to connect to the Data DX for economic history research, the following two issues need to be resolved. 1) The “subjectivity” of each database creator was not widely shared. 2) Research and development of technology to automate data entry was not actively pursued.
