Abstract

The number of museums in Japan doubled from the late 1980s to the late 1990s. More than a quarter of a century has passed since then, and many museums are reaching a point where they need to deal with aging of their facilities. However, local governments are facing financial deficits, budget cuts related to museums, and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, making it difficult for local museums to survive. If local museums disappear, the negative impact on the inheritance of local records and memories will be great. This paper examines the current state of local museums, which play a role in preserving and handing on regional records and memories, and efforts toward sustainable museum management in the future, based on advanced cases.
