Abstract

The singer's formants are considered as a common acoustic feature of excellent singer's voices, especially in the operatic singing. In this study, we created a singing task comprising pitch and vowel changes to compare the singer's formants in the voices of professional singers and students attending music college. The results showed that professional singer's had higher occupancies of the singer's formants. In addition, the degree of the fluctuation of the singer's formant against the pitch and/or vowel changes was smaller in the professional group than in the undergraduates. The singer's formants also tended to have higher "i" and lower "u" vowels. Furthermore, it was observed that differences in singing skills manifested when the vowels shifted from "i" to "u".
