Abstract

Dermatophilus congolensis infection causes dermatophilosis, an exudative type of dermatitis in various animals, including cattle, sheep, goats and horses. A dermatophilosis outbreak affected 20 of 29 cattle at dairy farm A in January 2022. An epidemiological survey led to the suspicion that the outbreak originated in public pasture B. Therefore, we investigated the disease in eight public pastures, including public pasture B. A total of 898 cows from eight public pastures were surveyed for dermatophilosis between June and September 2022. Dermatophilosis was detected in three cows in public pasture B. We next examined anti-D. congolensis antibodies in paired serum samples obtained from cattle at two public pastures at the time of initial collection and after grazing. The results confirmed infection before and after grazing in 21.4% and 88.1% of cows from public pasture B (n=42) and 41.9% and 61.3% of those from public pasture C (n=31). Pasture B had a 1.7-fold greater risk than pasture C (95% confidence interval, 1.1‐2.8). The grazing of cattle on public pastures is associated with a high risk of D. congolensis infection.
