Abstract

In order to ensure a service life of over 100 years, Tokyo Gate Bridge (TGB), which has been in service since February 2012, was designed and constructed using the latest structural design methods and materials available. Additionaly, a sensor monitoring system was implemented on the main bridge to facilitate advanced maintenance. The objectives of this monitoring system include: 1) monitoring traffic regulation information, 2) monitoring the behaviors of bearing, 3) monitoring fatigue damage at steel floor slabs, and 4) enabling efficient and secure inspection during earthquakes.

This paper reports on the monitoring results for objectives 2) and 3) obtained from the TGB main bridge. The authors also discuss technical and operational issues related to the sensor monitoring system to realize efficient and effective maintenance and management of the TGB.
