Abstract

Periodic inspections of railway overpass are often carried out at night, when the railway is out of service, and there is little time available for practical inspection work, as it takes time to bring in and out materials and equipment required for the inspection, and to install protection for electrical equipment and other equipment. In addition, the maintenance work of track and electrical equipment by the respective railway operators also restricts the determination of the days when bridge inspections can be carried out. In addition, when inspections are carried out using scaffolding, a large number of personnel other than bridge inspectors are required, and as a result, a large amount of non-inspection costs are also incurred. These issues need to be tackled efficiently, and the use of new technology is envisaged as one of the ways to do this, but the scope for improvement alone is limited. This paper therefore presents the actual efficiency improvements that have been made in the periodic inspection of railway overpass, from budgeting to inspection practice, as well as future developments towards further efficiency improvements.
